Trans documentaries!
A mini pride watchlist.
All of these films are older works (except in the case of Beautiful Darling which is more recent BUT covers the life of trans woman who passed away in the 70s) which depict nuanced perspectives on trans identities. If there is one thing I want you to take from these films it’s that transgender people have existed forever and will continue to do so regardless of if you “believe” in them, or not.
NOTE: due to their age, these works should be looked at from a historical perspective! At times they feature ignorant interviewers and a lack of understanding towards their subjects.
Beautiful Darling- Rasin 2010
An insight into Warhol superstar Candy Darling, a transgender actress who has yet to receive her flowers for her impact on film and wider pop culture.
BONUS: she has starred in plenty of cult classics created by Andy Warhol such as Women in Revolt and has inspired songs such as Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed. Her career and cultural mark is worth delving into.
Queens at Heart- N/A 1967
This documentary interviews four trans women on their lives. As ignorant as the questions may be, the women themselves are captivating and the piece acts as in important documentation of Queer history.
Transvestites- Monaghan 1971
Interviews with a range of trans women in New Zealand. Providing the perspective of trans sex workers during the 70s.
Boys in the Backyard- Kennerley 1997
An intimate insight into the relationship of two trans men in America during the 90s in which they not only discuss identity but the routine of their own lives.
BONUS: Kennerley has created many incredible Queer documentaries and short films including a follow up to Boys in the Backyard titled Matt.
